Next session – Srùbag 57 – Gaelic Song Cèilidh – Friday 26 June 2026, 7.30pm, including Gen Whitt

Next Srùbag No. 57 – Cèilidh Seinn na Gàidhlig – Gaelic Song Ceilidh – Friday 26 June 2026 7.30-9.30pm UK / Ireland time.

We are delighted to invite you to our next and 57th Srùbag.   Our special Guest is Gen Whitt, who will sing songs in Irish.  As well, we will have the usual participatory singaround – songs in Scottish and Irish Gaelic, Welsh and Breton please!  All are welcome to join us to sing a song or to listen!

Gen was born in Manchester, England, and although her parents were both from County Cork, Irish was not spoken at home. She fell in love with the Irish language later in life, during a period of genealogy research, and learned mainly by listening to CDs and YouTube clips. Her first introduction to singing in the Irish language was listening to children’s songs from John Spillane; later influences include Karan Casey, Liam Ó Maonlaí, Iarla Ó Lionáird, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, Nell Ní Chróinín, Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin, Róisín Elsafty, and others.

Gen only started singing with others during Covid, on various Zoom groups – first Boston and then others.
She visits Ireland regularly and has sung in person with groups in Dublin and Cork. Last year she translated an old song about Ireland, which her grandmother used to sing in English, into Irish, and sang it at Oireachtas Na Samhna. She just loves the Irish language and the beauty of Irish song.
